Financial Support
There were some trial-related expenses, including transportation and housing for expert witnesses. There are also ongoing expenses for prison support. Living on the inside is costly; phone time, toothpaste and other basic needs are only available through the prison commisary. Prisoners maintain a prison account for any expenses they incur.
We are also helping provide financial support for the Y-12 prisoners of conscience.

Prison Support
A HUGE THANKS to all who wrote to Judge Benjamin Settle on behalf of Anne, Bix, Lynne, Steve and Susan. It was so important for Judge Settle to hear our voices supporting those who call on our government to uphold the law when the government is so clearly in contravention of so many.
The trial is over, the sentencing done, and while some of Disarm Now Plowshares five have finished their prison time, Steve and Susan are doing time in Washington and TCalifornia. We are monitoring their status and are keeping the Contact page regularly updated with up-to-date contact information.
At the Contact page you will find mailing addresses along with guidelines for what you may send (Bureau of Prisons has lots of stuffy rules). You can never get too many letters when you’re on the inside. They will greatly appreciate your letters! Please don’t even think of sending packages!
Visitation varies depending on the prison and individual circumstances. For those who can have visitors other than family and lawyers, they have to put potential visitors on their visitor list, and there is a limit to the number of visitors on each person’s list. Potential visitors also have to fill out a form and be checked out by the Bureau of Prisons before being allowed to visit. If you want to visit any of the Disarm Now Plowshares your should send a letter to that person with your request.
Besides our letters and good wishes, we can support Disarm Now Plowshares by continuing our work to abolish Trident and all nuclear weapons. There are plenty of organizations working to do just that.
For those of you living in and around Puget Sound, you can get involved with Ground Zero Center for Nonviolent Action (gzcenter.org), which has resisted Trident for over 33 years. You can also keep up with (and get involved in) local campaigns at the new Puget Sound Nuclear Weapon Free Zone Website and blog (psnukefree.org). Endorse the Declaration and get involved!

Aside from the horrendously anti-life nature of the things, which is obvious–so obvious that the people who deal with them can;t call them “atomic bombs” but must refer to them as “assets”–I don’t think that most Amereicans really understand that THEY ARE ILLEGAL! Article VI Section 2 of the U.S. Constitution states that “This Constitution and all treaties made pursuant to it SHALL BE THE SUPREME LAW OF THE LAND”.
The US pretty much wrote the Nuremburg Principles.

There is no way we will eliminate nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction without pissing off some very powerful people. The great non-violent visionaries Jesus, Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr were all assassinated.
Thank you for your vision of peace, for your courage to take on the monster at the center of our American lives, and for your cheerfulness in doing so.
I am happy to support the action of these wonderful people. They not only showed how weakly protected these evil sites are but they risked almost certain jail terms, once again. I’m horrified at the U.S. and other “civilized” countries who spend such an obscene amount of money on killing and so little on humanity, both within the U.S. and outside of it.
Massive armament systems are needed to defend the unequal wealth of imperialistic nations. The U.S.A. is doing what the British Empire did in the 19th century.
Only when there is a just system – international socialism? – will there be no need for big expensive ‘defence’ systems. Justice is the obverse side of peace- you cannot have one without the other.
The most war-torn parts of Africa are those areas where greedy exploiters seek the treasures of oil, gold, coltan, etc.
The witness of these people is so needed in these days when words are so easily bandied about by Presidents and military leaders. We are blessed that we have such witnesses. Why are authorities so afraid of peaceful protest?
A Nobel Peace Prize was given to a person who believes that War is the Answer. How about a Peace Prize for those who place their bodies on the line by engaging in nonviolent nuclear disarmament?

A mother of 3 wonderful children, I am beholden to the Disarm Now Plowshares activists who took action that as a single mother I feel unable to take now in my life, but know needs to be accomplished. When governments will not disarm, indeed continue to fund and build weapons of war, threaten to use them, and do use them, we all are diminished. My children, beloved, are no more important than any mother¹s beloved children. The bravery of these six people who wished to show the horror all humans feel about nuclear warfare, and the need to disarm all nations, especially those who have the power to use nuclear weapons, is a valid and legal statement to make. They must not be punished, if indeed our image as a nation allowing free speech and the right to demonstrate peacefully, for peace, is to have any credibility overseas. No harm was done to any human person. The fence can be repaired, but not the damage done by condemning free speech — especially when the message is about peace and disarmament.

Dearest Susan and plowshares folks,
I often speak of what you do and I am grateful for the risks and discomfort which you take on.
The other day one of my friends looked at me and said, earnestly “Does it do any good?”
I am shocked and wonder how to respond. Finally I say, “Well what she does affects me a lot..It tells me there are peole who care. It gives me hope,”
But on the other hand, I know what my friend is getting at: How can a handful of people ever hope to change the course of history or change the thinking of the great numbers of people?
Most people are barely getting by from day to day. They don’t have time to think about anything else. They support the world as it is, and don’t know and probably don’t care about activists like Susan who risk their lives to make a point, to protest against the weapons that sit in our midst, ready to incinerate the world at the push of a button
So I mumble, “I know what you mean,” and start to walk away. But then, fighting back tears, I turn around and blurt out: “Did it do any good to burn draft records in the 60s? Only a few actually did that, but those actions changed a lot of minds.”
My friend is quiet. I wave goodbye. ‘See ya later.” I say..

Here in Aotearoa New Zealand we do not have any… even nuclear power stations. Nor do we allow ships that might carry them to enter our ports. We know well that they threaten civilization and the entire planet, so keep on speaking out!
With two friends I am facing trial for a similar – if less dangerous – ploughshares action on April 30 2008. (Yes, we spell thing different here!) We entered a spy base run by your too-inquisitive National Security Agency and deflated a great dome hiding a satellite-watching antenna… we go before a jury on 8 March 2010, so we know a little of how you feel.
We were protesting against spying via “signals intelligence” that leads to torture, even of the innocent, and helps with the invasion that has destroyed Iraq and will likewise destroy Afghanistan.
May your witness awaken many people to the horrors of violence, in which one person or nation is prepared to destroy another for reasons of greed, and calls it “security”.

My husband, John, and I are in Cambodia and we see the results of war, devastation and violence every day. It takes extreme measures to be a witness the madness of war, first strike and utter devastation of our planet and her peoples. One of the men who had the bravest heart to do this … is my dad’s best friend. Bix :D. Bill Bichsel. While I only have a couple memories of meeting him as a child and a teenager … he is a hero to me. And I feel like I know him so well through all the stories my dad tells us, again and again. My father (David Freitag, turning 85 years this February), would probably have been there right by Bix’s side if he wasn’t a husband and father.
