Financial Support

There were some trial-related expenses, including transportation and housing for expert witnesses. There are also ongoing expenses for prison support. Living on the inside is costly; phone time, toothpaste and other basic needs are only available through the prison commisary. Prisoners maintain a prison account for any expenses they incur.

We are also helping provide financial support for the Y-12 prisoners of conscience.

If you would like to make a financial contribution to Disarm Now Plowshares and/or Y-12, please make checks out to the “Resisters’ and Prisoners’ Support Fund” and write “Disarm Now”, “Y-12” or “General Prison Support” on the memo line.

The mailing address for contributions is:

Ground Zero Center for Nonviolent Action, 16159 Clear Creek Road NW, Poulsbo, WA 98370

You can contact Sue at sablao1@yahoo.com or 360-930-8697 with any questions about the prison support account.

Prison Support

A HUGE THANKS to all who wrote to Judge Benjamin Settle on behalf of Anne, Bix, Lynne, Steve and Susan.  It was so important for Judge Settle to hear our voices supporting those who call on our government to uphold the law when the government is so clearly in contravention of so many.

The trial is over, the sentencing done, and while some of Disarm Now Plowshares five have finished their prison time, Steve and Susan are doing time in Washington and TCalifornia.  We are monitoring their status and are keeping the  Contact page regularly updated with up-to-date contact information.

At the Contact page you will find mailing addresses along with guidelines for what you may send (Bureau of Prisons has lots of stuffy rules).  You can never get too many letters when you’re on the inside.  They will greatly appreciate your letters!  Please don’t even think of sending packages!

Visitation varies depending on the prison and individual circumstances.  For those who can have visitors other than family and lawyers, they have to put potential visitors on their visitor list, and there is a limit to the number of visitors on each person’s list.  Potential visitors also have to fill out a form and be checked out by the Bureau of Prisons before being allowed to visit.   If you want to visit any of the Disarm Now Plowshares your should send a letter to that person with your request.

Besides our letters and good wishes, we can support Disarm Now Plowshares by continuing our work to abolish Trident and all nuclear weapons.  There are plenty of organizations working to do just that.

For those of you living in and around Puget Sound, you can get involved with Ground Zero Center for Nonviolent Action (gzcenter.org), which has resisted Trident for over 33 years.  You can also keep up with (and get involved in) local campaigns at the new Puget Sound Nuclear Weapon Free Zone Website and blog (psnukefree.org).  Endorse the Declaration and get involved!

You can also find many links to organizations and information resources on nuclear weapons at The Nuclear Abolitionist.

    • You are all in my prayers for the Jan. 6 arraignment. You have my full support & admiration. Morgan

    • Catholic Workers in Christchurch, New Zealand, join in praising your significant action in seeking to disarm the Trident fleet. Its very existence is an abomidation in a world where 30 000 die from hunger and associated diseases every day of every year. We totally support your non-violent witness to justice and peace in the midst of this nuclear madness.

    • Yes, you have your priorities right. On behalf of myself and my grandchildren, I thank you!

P.S. I was an SOA Watch codefendant with Fr. Jerry Zawada in 2002. He’s a great guy who spends about half of his life in federal prisons. If you haven’t run into him at a Plowshares protest you may see him in prison.

    • Thank you for all you have done to bring the illegality and immorality of U.S. nuclear weapons to public awareness. You are true heroes and heroines of nonviolence!

      • Aside from the horrendously anti-life nature of the things, which is obvious–so obvious that the people who deal with them can;t call them “atomic bombs” but must refer to them as “assets”–I don’t think that most Amereicans really understand that THEY ARE ILLEGAL! Article VI Section 2 of the U.S. Constitution states that “This Constitution and all treaties made pursuant to it SHALL BE THE SUPREME LAW OF THE LAND”.

The US pretty much wrote the Nuremburg Principles.

It’s time we set ourselves down and found other employment for our brothers and sisters who are working on the Base, on the boats–

  11. From Whitefeather Peace House in Portland, Oregon, we thank our siblings in the direct disarmament movement for their bold actions. 15. I feel such pride knowing that there are folks like you who put their bodies & treasure & precious time on the line to say to those in power: Enough!

  16. Thank you to all for struggle for peace and disarmament. Although I could not go with this group, it makes me happy to see that in a country that “rules the world by force” that there are citizens acting directly to stop this crime that kills children and families and deprives the world of basic needs.

  17. Dear Lynne, Bix, Susan, Ann and Steve,
Your actions stir our consciences like snowflakes across our computer screens, visible in the periphery, irritating, and a reminder that real life has its intrusions.
There is no way we will eliminate nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction without pissing off some very powerful people. The great non-violent visionaries Jesus, Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr were all assassinated.
Thank you for your vision of peace, for your courage to take on the monster at the center of our American lives, and for your cheerfulness in doing so.

  18. I am happy to support the action of these wonderful people. They not only showed how weakly protected these evil sites are but they risked almost certain jail terms, once again. I’m horrified at the U.S. and other “civilized” countries who spend such an obscene amount of money on killing and so little on humanity, both within the U.S. and outside of it.

  19. Massive armament systems are needed to defend the unequal wealth of imperialistic nations. The U.S.A. is doing what the British Empire did in the 19th century.
Only when there is a just system – international socialism? – will there be no need for big expensive ‘defence’ systems. Justice is the obverse side of peace- you cannot have one without the other.
The most war-torn parts of Africa are those areas where greedy exploiters seek the treasures of oil, gold, coltan, etc.

  20. The witness of these people is so needed in these days when words are so easily bandied about by Presidents and military leaders. We are blessed that we have such witnesses. Why are authorities so afraid of peaceful protest?

  21. A Nobel Peace Prize was given to a person who believes that War is the Answer. How about a Peace Prize for those who place their bodies on the line by engaging in nonviolent nuclear disarmament?

  22. We are both delighted and sad to have to support such action(s)….delighted to be associated with committed Jesuits like Bichsel, Kelly and Dear, and others like Anne, Lynne and Susan, who chose to put their lives on the line in support of disarmament, and sad that our country requires the nonviolent actions of its citizens to force our country to live up to its ideals.

  23. A mother of 3 wonderful children, I am beholden to the Disarm Now Plowshares activists who took action that as a single mother I feel unable to take now in my life, but know needs to be accomplished. When governments will not disarm, indeed continue to fund and build weapons of war, threaten to use them, and do use them, we all are diminished. My children, beloved, are no more important than any mother¹s beloved children. I am grateful to those who make the world safer for all by dismantling weapons built to kill innocents around the world.

  24. It is a great sign of hope that this action occurred and that the friends were willing to risk their selves in this act of attempting to disarm their hearts and components of the nuclear weapon system. May their action be a seed that will bear the fruit of a disarmed world.

  25. Your plowshare action is like the star coming into the darkness from the East. Thank you for lighting the way….”God is light.” Love and kisses.Larry Purcell

  29. The bravery of these six people who wished to show the horror all humans feel about nuclear warfare, and the need to disarm all nations, especially those who have the power to use nuclear weapons, is a valid and legal statement to make. They must not be punished, if indeed our image as a nation allowing free speech and the right to demonstrate peacefully, for peace, is to have any credibility overseas. No harm was done to any human person. The fence can be repaired, but not the damage done by condemning free speech — especially when the message is about peace and disarmament.

  30. I fully support these courageous people in their non-violent anti-nuclear actions and thank them whole-heartedly. The price of nuclear weaponry weighs heavily on the shoulders of American people as well as the people of the world.

  35. I wholeheartedly support the members of Disarmnowplowshares for their courageous action to get our country to eliminate nuclear weapons. They deserve to be praised rather than condemned.

  36. Dearest Susan and plowshares folks,

I often speak of what you do and I am grateful for the risks and discomfort which you take on.

The other day one of my friends looked at me and said, earnestly “Does it do any good?”

I am shocked and wonder how to respond. Finally I say, “Well what she does affects me a lot..It tells me there are peole who care. It gives me hope,”

But on the other hand, I know what my friend is getting at: How can a handful of people ever hope to change the course of history or change the thinking of the great numbers of people?

Most people are barely getting by from day to day. They don’t have time to think about anything else. They support the world as it is, and don’t know and probably don’t care about activists like Susan who risk their lives to make a point, to protest against the weapons that sit in our midst, ready to incinerate the world at the push of a button

So I mumble, “I know what you mean,” and start to walk away. But then, fighting back tears, I turn around and blurt out: “Did it do any good to burn draft records in the 60s? Only a few actually did that, but those actions changed a lot of minds.”

My friend is quiet. I wave goodbye. ‘See ya later.” I say..

It shall not return to me empty,
    But shall do my will,

I have no doubt that the seeds that you sowed in your witness will bring forth fruit (and maybe even a few sunflowers!). Even in what may seem like a barren and desolate place

  48. Dear Bill, Steve, Anne, Lynne and Susan;

A huge THANK YOU for your “Disarm Now Plowshares” action. There is a great need for brave people like you to speak the truth about nuclear arms, weapons of mass destruction.

Here in Aotearoa New Zealand we do not have any… even nuclear power stations. Nor do we allow ships that might carry them to enter our ports. We know well that they threaten civilization and the entire planet, so keep on speaking out!

With two friends I am facing trial for a similar – if less dangerous – ploughshares action on April 30 2008. (Yes, we spell thing different here!) We entered a spy base run by your too-inquisitive National Security Agency and deflated a great dome hiding a satellite-watching antenna… we go before a jury on 8 March 2010, so we know a little of how you feel.

We were protesting against spying via “signals intelligence” that leads to torture, even of the innocent, and helps with the invasion that has destroyed Iraq and will likewise destroy Afghanistan.

May your witness awaken many people to the horrors of violence, in which one person or nation is prepared to destroy another for reasons of greed, and calls it “security”.

Peace and Advent blessings to you, especially to my unmet Jesuit brothers.
    Peter Murnane (Dominican friar)

  131. I offer my endorsement and enccouragement to the efforts of Plowshares. I long and pray for the day when our tax dollars will go to education and healthcare rather than to weapons of mass destruction. The splitting of the atom in the service of military power has been a pandora’s box of enormous proportions. May we learn soon how to live without them.

  132. Thank you for your public witness. I am encouraged by your action. Let more of us come together and show the world there is a different way.

  133. What a blessed gift for the world, in these days when we all speak of peace. Thank you, every one of you…Jean Chapman

The wild hope of peace lives in the hearts of many. Public deeds for peace are few. Thanks for yours.

  137. Thanks for your action calling attention to nuclear weapons. Thanks for all you do for peace.

  138. Thank you for your witness and call for peace.

  139. Freedom is never a given. It has a high price which is truth, resonsibility, knowledge and commitment to it’s life. How many peole do we see with these values much less working on them.

You’re a witness for me of people who have these values and the commitment to keeping them alive.

    God be with you.

  140. Thank you to all envolved in the Disarm Now Plowshare action. It is fitting that in this winter season your light shines as a ray of hope in our darkness. Peace be with you and thank you for the encouragement to work a little harder at peace and justice for all people.

  141. Sending gratitude and support for the work of peace making in our world. How desperately we need that kind of commitment.

  142. Thank you for your work of peacemaking in our world. We desperately need that kind of commitment.

  143. “COURAGE is the price that life exacts for granting peace.” (Amelia Earhart) Thank you for yours’ .

  144. May you draw courage from Justin and pass it on to the rest of us:
“We ourselves were well conversant with war, murder and everything evil, but all of us throughout the whole wide earth have traded in our weapons of war. We have exchanged our swords for plowshares, our spears for farm tools … now we cultivate the fear of God, justice, kindness, faith, and the expectation of the future given us through the crucified one … the more we are persecuted and martyred, the more do others in ever increasing numbers become believers.” –Justin, martyred in 165 AD

  145. Thank you for your courageous, loving, and prophetic witness.

  146. Good work, folks.

  147. Thank you for your courageous and selfless witness. You inspire us. We are so proud of you.

  148. There is no path to peace, peace is the path

    FEAR NOT

  149. Aloha and thank you! We support you and are inspired by your courageous and prophetic action!

  150. Thanks for your action. Throughout the world, juries are refusing to convict plowshares activists. I’m looking forward to a similar result in the united states.

    may peace prevail on earth

  151. Please acquit Susan Crane, Bill Bichsel, Steve Kelly, Anne Montgomery, and Lynne Greenwald. They were protesting nonviolently, it is an issue that still needs to be made public.

My name is Jessica Suguitan I live in Queens, NY

  152. I fully support the Plowshares activists.

  153. Please add our names to the list — Bryce Brown and Alice Zillah. Thank you for your example.

  154. I have always supported the Plowshares ! I am vehemently opposed to war!

At this time I am concentrated on Emmanuel – God is with us! The final verse of the hymn is an appropriate one for our times:

“O come Desire of Nations, bind in one the hearts of humankind. O bid our sad divisions cease and be for us our PRINCE OF PEACE!”

  155. I have known my uncle Bill Bichsel all my life. And am his nephew, and I believe in and support the Plowshares. This should open up the American peoples eyes. We stand beside the courageous 5, and will fight to the end side by side. Peace and Love to all that stand for Abolitio.

    Thank You
    John C. Twohy

  156. The Plowshares and specifically the 5 activists have my full admiration and support in their non-violent action against the illegality of the nuclear weapons.

  157. Bless you and thanks for all you do. You are all in our prayers and thoughts.

  158. Blessings to you for this courageous action. You are in our thoughts and prayers in solidarity. May God’s justice and peace kiss the earth during this Holy Season of the Incarnation.

  159. We support you completely and applaud your actions. You are in our prayers now and on Jan. 6

  160. We support your heroic effort to eliminate war and its devastating consequences! We keep you in our prayers!

  161. My husband, John, and I are in Cambodia and we see the results of war, devastation and violence every day. It takes extreme measures to be a witness the madness of war, first strike and utter devastation of our planet and her peoples. We are grateful beyond measure for the actions of the Disarm Now Plowshares movement and brave, faithful people.

  162. One of the men who had the bravest heart to do this … is my dad’s best friend. Bix :D. Bill Bichsel. While I only have a couple memories of meeting him as a child and a teenager … he is a hero to me. And I feel like I know him so well through all the stories my dad tells us, again and again. My father (David Freitag, turning 85 years this February), would probably have been there right by Bix’s side if he wasn’t a husband and father. It brings tears to my eyes (good tears), to see that JESUS’ work and SPIRIT is ALIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I support the Plowshares, and am very grateful for their sacrifices. I only hope that one day (soon isn’t soon enough) I might be able to do something more to stand for the most important thing in our lives. Actually, I now PRAY, Jesus, my Lord and Savior, we praise You and we thank You, please give us (me, my son, my friends, I hope everyone!!!) the strength and courage to show the world that You are the Light, the Truth and the Way. We WILL fight with LOVE, TRUTH, and sometimes hammers of peace and blood, to change the world. God Bless.

  163. Thank you for your powerful witness to this evil so
inbred in our culture. Every day I ask how to make
the reality of Trident apparent to Americans and I
am so grateful for the risks you have taken to expose this hidden monster lurking in our Salish Sea and oceans worldwide.
We plan to see you in court.

  192. I support the actions of Disarm Now Plowshares and all others in the efforts toward a truly peaceful future. 198. Dear Bix, Susan, Anne,Steve and Lynne,
Thank you for your courageous and inspiring action at Bangor and for all the hardships you’ve endured afterwards. My hope and prayer is that
the example you give to me and to thousands of others will draw attention to the absolute necessity we have as residents of this planets to take risks in drawing a close to all warfare and especially the nuclear threat which promises to obliterate every vestige of life on earth. It’s my hope and dream to follow the path you have so generously chosen.
I pray also that the next part of your journey of court appearances and possible incarceration will treat you well, even as we treasure the meaningfulness of what you continue to accept. May thousands follow the lead you have given. Solidarity and thanks to each of you!

  203. Dear Bix and all,
I am so very proud of you and I wholeheartedly support your actions at Bangor. I pray that your bravery will help to put an end to this culture of violence that breeds more violence and more violence, Thank you for your courage and your endless commitment to Peace.

  205. Thank you for your persistence and for the risks you are willing to take in response to the risk in which we have all been placed.

  206. I think of the future of my children and grandchildren and the madness of this age we are now living in.

  224. May there be peace on earth. I support the work and courage of Disarm Now Plowshares to help bring the light to the darkness of war.

  225. I support the Plowshares activists who are NONVIOLENTLY resisting the VIOLENCE of nuclear weapons. Our planet’s future depends upon — indeed, REQUIRES — such courageous people and their courageous nonviolent actions.

  226. Please add my name as a supporter of the Disarm Now Plowshares letter. I do not believe in using violence to further my aims, nor do I support others using violence in my name. I don’t know how to solve the world’s problems, but this much I am aware of, violence begets more violence, terrorism begets more terrorism, humiliation begets humiliation. I believe, as Henry David Thoreau did, that it is more criminal to pay taxes than it is to withhold them for peaceful purposes. I believe we must not only protest and condemn weapons of mass destruction, we must work to stop paying for them with our taxes. I urge you to support the Religious Freedom Peace Tax Fund Act before Congress.

  227. Satyagraha!

  246. In deep gratitude to those plowshare activists for their courage, insight, and determination to face violence with compassion and non-violence, I add my name to the many who express their thoughts here. Rather than trial and recrimination, these activists with their selfless acts of resistance decrying the use of weapons of mass murder should be celebrated as the heroes/heroines that they are. I send a prayer of support and thanks to those beacons of light who have chosen the difficult path of illuminating the dark recesses of the violent and self-righteous world of nuclear proliferation

  247. I send you my gratitude and my love for all you have done to bring an end to nuclear weapons and to make this a peaceful world.

  251. God bless your commitment to nonviolence and your courage in action. We support you Five and keep praying for you.
Thank you for your good example for us, too.

  252. These resisters are the true citizens of America. They are the real heroes and heroines of our age. They should be commended rather than persecuted. May God give them strength to continue their witness. (From a former Trident design engineer.)

  253. Thank you for your work, anchored in faith and done with courage.

  254. As a long-time member of United for Peace of Pierce County as well as an associate member of Veterans for Peace I extend full support of the Disarm Now Ploughshares action and suggest their exoneration on all charges. Would that there were thousands with such courage in order to clog the judicial system in the name of the international safety of humanity.

  255. Please know i support you and admire your efforts. Good luck with this latest “trial”.

  256. Thank you for what you are doing to assure a safe future for our planet and its creatures. Your courage, strength and vision inspire the rest of us to do more.
I gratefully support your efforts and the message you
are carrying to more and more people.

  257. The Disarm Now Plowshares defendants should be thanked , not persecuted, .for their selfless actions at Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor where Trident nuclear weapons are stored or deployed on Trident submarines.

As a member of Veterans for Peace, I request their acquittal on all charges.

  258. Although we face risks when we take direct action in the UK, we learn from you that these risks do not compare with those you face in the US. I commend your courage and wish you the very best possible outcome in the court case.

  259. Kudos and good luck to the Disarm Now Plowshares defendants

  260. Thank you all… and the best of luck. Sanity will prevail one day.

  268. Dear Friends in Peace,

You have been most courageous. It is both sad and potentially criminal that politicians and their legal advisors have not found similar courage. Despite the recent verdict, I hope that time will come, and the US and my own country, the UK, will lead the world against rather than towards war crimes.

And when that time does come, it will be in no small measure due to the courage of people like the Plowshares activists. Thank you.

  270. Thank you for your courageous action of Nov 2009; and for sharing about it last month with St. Patrick’s faith community. I’ve been somewhat aware of Bangor, but had little idea of current moves to increase warheads. Are young people engaged in opposition to this build-up? With all the talk of economic cost cutting, who is questioning how our government resources go to this useless endeavor?
As you followed the leading of Spirit by entering the base, may She continue to surround and support you through these next steps in your journey of witness.
