Details, details, details… First you get convicted; that’s a sure thing when there is absolutely no way to argue any sort of reasonable defense (you know – threat or use of nuclear weapons is illegal, etc, etc…….). Then you cool your heels (always wanted to use that phrase) while you await the inevitable sentencing. Sooner or later (usually later; the slow wheels of injustice) they finish those lengthy pre-sentencing reports that provide the judge with (in many cases) a litany of bad deeds (if you consider resisting something that is immoral and illegal a “bad deed”), and a clerk records sentencing dates.
Well, our friends who declared their independence from nuclear weapons a year ago finally have sentencing dates. In a little over two months they get to appear in court and hear the judge rattle of their sentences along with some admonition about using legal means to express their dissatisfaction with our nation’s illegal nuclear weapons activities.
One might wonder why David Corcoran, who hasn’t yet had the benefit of a trial, is listed!?!?!? Just how does one sentence someone who has not yet been convicted (sound of scratching head)??? Minor detail…
Of course, after Bill Bichsel’s and Jackie Hudson’s cruel and grossly negligent treatment while in custody of the Bureau of Prisons (aka: Bureau of Punishment), it just might be time to submit a motion for immediate dismissal and unconditional release (that’s fancy lawyer talk for “Let my people go!”). And – as at least one legal expert has suggested, some legal action may be warranted. But alas, the court will brush such things aside. After all, this is a simple “trespassing” matter.
At very least, I should hope that the defendants’ attorneys will move for consolidated sentencing. None of this divide and conquer stuff. Let’s get them all in the courtroom at the same time and see what happens!!!
At any rate, if you are going to be in the Knoxville area in September, here are the sentencing dates so we can show up to support our friends and colleagues in resistance.
Peace in the midst of the madness,
